Signs Your Dentures Need Relining

Denture Relining in Meridian

Dentures are removable dental prosthetics that are used to replace your natural missing teeth. A denture reline is a procedure where the dentures are re-fitted and adjusted to account for changes in the shape of the jawbone due to bone loss, tooth loss, gum disease, or significant  weight changes.

A reline can be done at our office in our in-house lab. The procedure usually takes one day . The first step is to take an impression of the patient’s mouth so we can get the best possible fit with the patient’s current bone and tissue conditions. The dentures are then processed in our in-house lab where the old acrylic is removed and the new acrylic is injected with the patient’s new impression. Once the denture is processed and finished we will check for proper fit inside the patient’s mouth. If any adjustments are needed we will adjust any potential sore spots or areas of irritation.

A reline can help to improve the fit, comfort, and function of your dentures, and is an important part of keeping them in good functioning condition. A denture reline should be down around every 24 months or earlier if any significant bone loss or weight loss occurs.

Type of relines

There are three types of denture relines: hard, soft, and temporary.
  1. Hard reline – It is made from acrylic, and is bonded to the existing denture if the current acrylic is still in good condition. If the current acrylic is not in good condition we will remove all existing acrylic and inject all new acrylic. This type of reline can be used to improve the fit of a denture that has become loose and also strengthen the denture for a longer life.
  2. Soft reline – A soft reline is made from a soft pliable, yet strong, material such as nylon or silicone. Soft relines are a great option for somebody looking for a little more grip and hold as well as comfort in a denture.
  3. Temporary reline – A temporary reline is a procedure that is done after a patient has had their   teeth extracted. As the extraction sites are healing the swelling  goes down causing the denture to fill loose. This procedure is done usually every three months for the first year. Then a final hard reline will be needed. Temporary relines will not last more than a year; the temporary reline material will begin to crack and peel out.

5 signs your dentures need relining

Dentures are an important investment, and it’s important to take care of them so they can last for many years. Even the best-made dentures will eventually need to be relined, as they will naturally shift over time due to the changes in your mouth. Here are five signs that it’s time to have your dentures relined:

  • You’ve developed sores or irritations around your gums.
  • Your dentures no longer fit as snugly as they used to.
  • You’ve noticed that your dentures are slipping or shifting when you eat or speak.
  • Your bite feels different or you are having difficulty chewing.
  • You’ve noticed that your gums have shrunken or changed shape.

Benefits of denture relines

It’s important to take care of your dentures to ensure that they last. One way to extend their life is to have them relined. Dentures naturally change over time, and as they do, they can become loose and uncomfortable. A reline essentially “refits” the denture so that it fits snugly against the gums. This not only makes the denture more comfortable to wear but also helps to prevent sores and irritation. In addition, a reline can improve the fit of a denture so that it stays in place more securely.
